DECK; Master Of Balloons

This year we've had the pleasure of working with a host of incredible suppliers, talented local businesses and creatives- collaborating on exciting projects and new ventures.

We have particularly enjoyed building a close relationship and partnership with balloon extraordinar DECK.

DECK is a boutique style company based in Norfolk, specialising in balloon art and installation. We caught up with owner and all-round wonderful human Chris, who explains how it all began...

As kids, me and my sister loved disco dancing. We used to host pretend parties in my bedroom, charging our mum and dad 50p to enter. We’d decorate the room with sheets, foil and paper or whatever rubbish we could find. We’d draw the curtains closed and program our brother’s 1984 Amstrad computer so that the screen flashed like disco lights.

My fascination with disco music and culture didn’t subside as I grew older and I became enamoured with the history surrounding the downtown Loft parties of New York in the 1970s.

Balloons were an integral part of the aesthetic of those New York parties so they began making appearances at my own parties which I hosted most weekends at my bedsit on St Gregory’s Green in Norwich.

At the parties I’d push the furniture aside and deck the ceiling of the small 3m x 3m room with balloons. I noticed that something very special happened in the room once it was decked - people became looser. Visually uplifting the familiar environment to a high-spirited sanctuary gave a signal to the senses that it's time to live it up. The message was: you are allowed to revel here, leave your headaches at the door.

The parties soon outgrew my small bedsit so I started bringing balloons to other venues and dance floors in Norwich. I was at my happiest spinning on a dance floor and my hobby was decorating those dance floors.

After a period of ill health I decided to work for myself and entertained the idea of taking my balloon decor more seriously. I attended a balloon decorating course hosted by my preferred balloon manufacturer and picked up a qualification and essential skills on how to turn my hobby into a business.

This is when DECK was born. I have since had some exciting projects working with shop, businesses, club nights, private parties and weddings.

I am driven by the prospect of decor bringing people together and enhancing the togetherness at a party or event and making special occasions unique and unforgettable...

We recently styled a wedding at the stunning Narborough Hall Gardens, Norfolk and got DECK on board to create a gorgeous shimmery display in The Dancing Room.

Launch Party: Release of Series 1: Havana, By Photographer Boo George

Award-winning Photographer Boo George has released his first photography book; 'Series 1: Havana' set in Havana, Cuba.

The launch party and exhibition for the book took place in Alex Eagle Studio in Soho, London at the beginning of December. We drew inspiration from the Cuban references in the book using palm leaves, rustic wooden textures and contrasting pops of polished copper.

We served two rum-based cocktails using Havana Club- a classic Mojito with Havana Club 3yr Old and a Cuban Ginger made with Havana Club Especial rum, Mela Bottega Apple Liqueur, ginger, lime and mint. Alongside these were shots of cocktail snacks, including salted broad beans and paprika popcorn.

Party In Style

Princess Olympia of Greece celebrated her 21st birthday in true decadent style earlier this Summer in the Cotswolds.

Olympia shared the party with her father, Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, who was celebrating his 50th, and their combined ages lent the party its theme: "5021 Revolution." Guests were told to revolutionise the traditional black tie attire for the party," which led to an eclectic mix of crystal-studded trainers with a ball gowns and ornate spiky headdresses.

The decor inside the venue was a pretty combination of delicate florals, blushing pinks and stacks of macarons and candles, whilst the outside of the building was adorned with cascading balloons and pops of bold colour and pastel hues; totally fit for an elegant Princess.

New Gin on the block

We are always excited to discover a new premium gin, and this really is a good find.

The London Dry Gin is born in the beautiful coastal South Devon and it’s sure to put a fair wind in your sails. Packed with zesty grapefruit, lemon and lime flavours and underpinned by spicy coriander and a resinous juniper spice. This carefully selected variety of citrus fruit was actually picked because they were some of the very fruit that cargos carried by the famous Salcombe Fruiters, a key part of the spirit behind the brand.

Perfect served simply on ice with a slice of pink grapefruit.

A definite hit this Summer.
